Final Fantasy
30th Anniversary
x Yokohama

The creators of FINAL FANTASY were established in Hiyoshi, Kohoku-ku, Yokohama and many staff who worked on Square's early works were from universities in Kanagawa Prefecture, and as such FINAL FANTASY and Yokohama have a very close relationship. In addition, Yokohama, a seaport city with a history of active trade with foreign countries, strongly reminded Square Enix staff of the port towns that often appear in the Final Fantasy series. This project was realized with the support of the city of Yokohama by setting up the "Final Fantasy 30th Anniversary x Yokohama" executive committee with business operators including the Minatomirai area. A total of five projects were developed, including a special projection mapping screening of FINAL FANTASY XIV original video works, and Final Fantasy specifications for famous places and specialties in Yokohama.

COLLAB 01: FINAL FANTASY XIV PROJECTION MAPPING

A Final Fantasy XIV Projection Mapping on the Yokohama Grand Intercontinental Hotel called “Bahamut Invasion of the Marine City of Yokohama” (Kaiyou toshi Yokohama ‘Ryuujin Bahamut, Shuurai), treating audiences to a free spectacle which made use of the 140-meter (459-foot) wall of the hotel as a humongous screen. An original video depicted the fierce battle between the summoned beast, Bahamut, against the Warriors of Light, set in the great marine city of Yokohama, a prosperous trade port city since ancient times.

The show unfolded with an initial tribute to the entire Final Fantasy series, countdown style, followed by the introduction of a ragtag team of adventurers: the reliable paladin, a mysterious black mage, the stalwart dragoon, and a cute little white mage. Large speakers near the site thundered music and sound effects, which really added to the experience. The characters appeared in 3D, as if floating from the hotel's walls.

Square Enix started planning for the projection mapping two years before the event, and actual production took more than half a year to complete. Viewing areas included along the Cosmo World canal, near the Cup Noodle Museum, the steam train road and other places. The show ran for 10 minutes from June 10-11, five times a day (19:20, 19:50, 20:20, 20:50, 21:20).

A special live broadcast event was held on June 10 from 6PM to 9PM at the Landmark Hall of the Yokohama Landmark Tower for the Final Fantasy 30th Anniversary x Yokohama collaboration. Only 450 spots were available via a lottery for Square Enix Members.
